Driving in and around France

Driving in France is straightforward thanks to its modern and extensive road network, which allows you to travel from region to region with ease.

Major cities and towns are linked by A roads, otherwise known as autoroutes, which are the French equivalent of motorways and marked with blue road signs. While some are free to drive on, the majority are toll roads – look out for signs saying ‘Péage’.

Toll roads are usually less busy and maintained to a high standard, perfect if you’re driving for long stretches. Other types of road to look out for are route nationales, or N roads, which are marked with green signs. Locally operated department roads, D roads, use a white sign system.

As in Ireland, French speed limits vary according to the type of road. Autoroutes tend to be 130 km/h, while urban motorways and dual carriageways separated by a central reservation are 110 km/h. Built up areas come with a 50 km/h speed limit, which goes up to 90 km/h outside built-up areas.

When driving in France, it’s also important to know you’re required to carry a warning triangle, reflective jackets and a breathalyser in your vehicle at all times. More information on this can be found here

Driving through France’s historical towns and cities is a charming experience, with plenty of packed local delights to see. La Côte d'Or is a dreamy but short route though the French wine region from Santenay to Dijon that passes by idyllic villages such as Puligny-Montrachet, Volnay, Gevrey-Chambertin and Marsannay-la-Côte.

For jaw-dropping coastal scenery, head along the French Riviera from Saint-Tropez to Nice, stopping off at glamorous Cannes along the way.

A quick guide to France

The beauty of France is its diversity, offering a different adventure with every region you explore. Whether you’re looking for a cultured city break, a relaxing holiday on the Mediterranean coast or a whistle-stop history trip, you’ll find it here.

Discover Paris’ iconic sights

Wander the cobbled streets of the French capital and you’ll encounter icons of the Paris skyline. Stand beneath the epic Eiffel Tower and crane your neck to see the top – a ride up to the panoramic viewing platform is a must for spectacular views of the city.

Add the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe and Notre Dame de Paris to your itinerary as well to ensure you see all of the city’s heavyweights during your break.

Beyond the main tourist attractions of the city, there are countless more treasures to discover by car. Head west on the A13 to the lavish Versailles Palace – around a 50-minute drive from central Paris. Meander through the immaculate manicured gardens and admire the incredible Hall of Mirrors inside this opulent royal household.

Driving to Disneyland Paris is easy from the capital. Head east along the A4 and you should be there in around 40 minutes. This magical experience makes for the perfect family day out. Brave the adrenaline-pumping rides, gaze at Sleeping Beauty’s castle and snap selfies with Mickey and the gang.

Explore the French Riviera

Stretches of golden sand, crystal clear waters, charming seaside towns – welcome to the Côte d'Azur. The sun-drenched French Riviera is a place of glamour and beauty, with a bounty of locations to discover along the coastline.

Drive from one idyllic destination to the other, soaking up the unique appeal of each town and city. Sun yourself on the shores of Saint-Tropez, get lost in Nice’s pretty old town and study some of Picasso’s finest works in Antibes.

Experience unique Normandy

Venture to the northern coast of France to soak up the natural beauty and rich history of Normandy. Pebbled beaches and dramatic cliffs are in abundance here, ideal for an epic coastal drive.

From pretty Étretat, head inland to picturesque Rouen and you’ll discover a goldmine of medieval heritage. Visit its cluster of museums for a trip back in time and stop off at the Gothic cathedral to admire its incredible architecture.

Finish off with a trip to Mont St-Michel, one of France’s greatest treasures. Wander up a maze of narrow alleys to the UNESCO-listed abbey. Roam the medieval monument and take in the show-stopping views across the bay from the open terrace.

Car hire in France gives you a flexible and reliable way to explore this amazing country. Whether you’re planning a city break or putting together a road trip, car rental is the best way to get around.
