Driving in and around Malaga

Navigating your way around Malaga is made easy by the well-connected roads that link it to Spain’s most famous cities.

The nearby motorway, known locally as the Autovía del Mediterráneo, or A-7, follows the coast from Barcelona, through Malaga and continues onto Estepona. This highway will let you explore all of the surrounding resorts, while you take in the picturesque views of Spain’s south coast along the way.

In Spain you drive on the right-hand side of the road and it’s compulsory to wear a seatbelt. If you’re travelling as a family, children under the age of 12 are not allowed to sit in the front passenger seat.

The maximum speed limit on motorways and dual carriageways is 120km/h. On ordinary roads the limit is 90km/h and in built-up urban areas you must stay below 50km/h. Avoid parking on red or yellow lines and look out for associated fees.

Car rental in Malaga gives you the fantastic opportunity to explore southern Spain and the surrounding countryside.

Venture south-west to Marbella, along the AP-7, for a change of scenery and world-famous sandy beaches. Follow the A-45 and A-92 north if you’re planning a day trip to historic Seville or drive north-east to see Granada’s Moorish palaces.

The journey to Ronda may be more than 100km through the mountains but it’s worth it to experience this spectacular city perched high above a deep gorge. For the ultimate driving adventure, take the winding roads through the hills of nearby Montes de Málaga Natural Park for views of lush pine forests.

A quick guide to Malaga

Sun-kissed Malaga is a soulful blend of old and new, nestled on the ever popular Costa del Sol. With idyllic beach spots, contemporary art galleries and charming historical sights, it’s easy to fall in love with Malaga. The city is the perfect springboard for exploring the surrounding area – channel your inner explorer and unearth the gems of Andalucía.

Enjoy a taste of art

As the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, Malaga is not a city to shy away from its artistic heritage. Visit the museum dedicated to the world-renowned artist to see the spectacular collection of work from across his life and admire the colourful exhibits of Centro de Arte Contemporáneo.

Art isn’t just found in Malaga’s galleries though – it decorates the streets and shines through in the locals’ artistic approach to food. Follow a trail of extraordinary installations in the centre of Malaga, created as part of a project to transform the city’s Soho district.

Experience the laidback Mediterranean lifestyle

Famous for its divine food and stunning landscapes, Malaga is the ideal spot for a relaxing break. Make for Playa de la Malagueta and stretch out on the shore to soak up the rays. When temperatures soar, take a dip in the beautiful waters or escape the heat at nearby Paseo del Muelle Dos, a contemporary waterfront promenade.

If you’re holidaying with little ones in tow, drive south-west of the city to La Batería Park in Torremolinos. Amble lazily along the trails, rent a rowing boat on the picturesque lake and enjoy a picnic among the carefully landscaped gardens.

Meander through the cobbled streets of Malaga’s neighbourhoods and you’ll find a choice of tiny tapas bars, quaint cafes and authentic taverns. Whether you want a place that offers a quick bite to eat or somewhere to graze on small dishes, there’s plenty of choice in this city.

In true Mediterranean fashion, you can enjoy a bounty of fresh seafood at the city’s finest restaurants such as the highly-rated Marisqueria Jacinto.

Head for the lively Mercado Atarazanas and make your way through an authentic mix of food stalls at this traditional covered market. Soak up the animated atmosphere and don’t forget to look up at the beautiful stained glass wall above the entrance of what was once a seven-arched shipyard.

Explore historic sites

When you’re in Malaga, you can’t miss the 16th century cathedral. Admire the elaborate façade before heading inside to explore the striking nave. Look up to the soaring domed ceiling and wander between 15 different chapels, each exhibiting spellbinding stained glass designs. Venture up to the roof and you’ll be rewarded with stunning views across the city.

Take a trip to Alcazaba, Malaga’s ancient fortress dating back to Moorish times. Nestled next to the city’s Roman Amphitheatre, the fortress once protected the royal family from invaders, but now it looms over the city as a reminder of the area’s rich heritage.

Car hire in Malaga will allow you to experience the best of this magnificent city and the wider Costa del Sol.
