FAQ’s - renting a car in Ireland
Please choose a category below:
Remember to bring your driver’s licence and make sure it is valid – for rentals in Ireland you must have had your full licence for at least two years. UK licences come in two parts, both of these must be produced at the time of rental. Any subsequent calls to verify the licence will slow down the rental process considerably and possibly lead to administration fees.
Also have you booked your extras – if you need a child seat or GPS remember to pre-book online to save time, these can also be added at time of rental by asking the Hertz representative.
Child seats are mandatory by law in Ireland for children up to 12 years old (or 1.5 metres) while travelling in motor vehicles. Hertz offers forward facing safety seats for children from 9 months up, for all vehicle groups and from all locations without advance notice.
Important: Parents of children younger than 9 months must bring their own rear facing infant seats as we do not supply.
On arrival Please take the time to familiarise yourself with all vehicle controls and what fuel type the vehicle is, either Diesel or Un-Leaded Petrol. If you are unsure please ask a Hertz representative. Please note in Ireland Unleaded fuel is dispensed from the Green fuel pumps and Diesel fuel is dispensed from the Black fuel pumps.
Also check vehicle for pre-existing damage if any and make sure that this is noted on the Vehicle Pre-inspection Form before leaving the Hertz Car park. Additions cannot be made subsequent to the vehicle leaving the rental location.
In Ireland we drive on the left-hand side of the road, the opposite to Continental Europe & the US. Please make sure to be mindful at all times, especially at round-a-bouts, Junctions and exiting car parks.
Hertz Vehicles driven into Northern Ireland will be subject to a cross border fee of €30.00 and a drop off fee will apply to vehicles returned to a Hertz location in Northern Ireland.
Whilst driving in Ireland the Road signs & speed limits are in Kilometres in the Republic however are in Miles in Northern Ireland. Please be careful as there are limited border identifiers and you can easily cross from signage in Kilometres to Miles.
Please remember that there is no need to pay the M50 Toll directly. All M50 Toll charges will be billed by Hertz to your credit card. All other toll charges should be paid by you as you pass through.
To request an invoice for M50 toll charges please email: customerservices@hertz.ie
Remember to check the vehicle fully on return and remove all your personal belongings, sunglasses, Camera etc. Return the vehicle to the Hertz rental returns which may be different from where you collected the vehicle.
