Rennes is a modern city that’s proud of its medieval roots. Its character is embedded in everything from the detail of its centuries-old architecture, to its vibrant nightlife. If you’re only here for a few days, these are the must-see places and must-do activities to add to your itinerary.
Uncover the historic quarter
Harking back to the medieval period, Duchesne Tower was rebuilt in the 15th century and is for many the symbol of the city. From the top you’re rewarded with the finest panoramic views over the old town and the rest of Rennes – the ideal place to get your bearings.
Just a short stroll away is Porte Mordelaise, which has served as another important point of defence in French history. The 15th-century gateway is still intact, although the moat long since dried up. Wander through its arches and you’ll be walking in the footsteps of citizens from 500 years ago. Around the corner you’ll find Maison des Carmes – the old site of the Carmelite convent – located on one of the oldest streets in the city.
Rennes is renowned for its beautiful old squares – perfect to relax and enjoy a picnic. Place du Champ-Jacquet is one of the most notable. It’s a fine example of Rennes’ medieval style, with tall narrow buildings featuring large windows and decorative wooden façades.
Unwind in Rennes’ gardens
Just outside the old town is Parc du Thabor, one of the most beautiful gardens in the whole of Brittany. Once owned by the Notre-dame-en-Saint-Melaine, it was redesigned in the 19th century. Today you can enjoy a fragrant walk through a garden which features more than 2,000 rose varieties. Elsewhere, there’s an aviary, an old-fashioned bandstand and even a cave to seek out.
You can explore another pastoral paradise a little further out of town. Parc des Gayeulles is the city’s largest park, covering more than 100 hectares of woodland, lakes and fields. Walk or cycle across the park or clamber through the trees at Foret Adrenaline. It has a swimming pool, ice skating rink and tennis courts, so pack up your hire car if you fancy an active afternoon.
Appreciate the arts
Culture abounds throughout Rennes – it’s the home of many antique artworks and modern masterpieces. You’ll find much of it at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, which is almost a piece of art itself, with its intricate décor encased within glorious 18th century walls. It houses everything from Ancient Egyptian relics to sketches by Leonardo da Vinci and Rembrandt.
Over at Eleven Art Gallery there’s a selection of perspective-changing photography. The exhibition space changes regularly, covering a wide range of topics and styles from reportage to portraits and more. The modern Les Champs Libres also hosts temporary exhibitions across the year. This large glass building was only opened in 2008, but it’s quickly become the cultural hub of Rennes – as it also accommodates the city’s central library and a science centre.
For urban artwork, visit Place Sainte-Anne. An architectural wonder of a piazza, it has a huge variety of street art which adds a new layer of creativity to the old streets.
