Taken from the German word for rooster, there’s plenty more going on in Hahn than nature’s alarm clock. Surrounded by luscious countryside and vineyards, enjoy a round of golf with a view or taste the best wines of the region.
Then, pop in your hire car to enjoy a wealth of attractions, from towering castles to the bright lights of Frankfurt.
Wine tasting splendour
Hahn’s rural district, Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis, is rich with natural wonder, with rivers, low mountain ranges and meadows aplenty. Encompassed by quaint towns and villages, this district is also known for its vineyards.
The town of Bingen is under an hour away from Hahn, nestled against the Rhine River. Here, wine production represents the town’s main economy and is celebrated throughout the year with various events and festivities. Their annual wine festival, during August and September, brings together the year’s culinary highlights with local winemakers sharing their craft, as well as featureing concerts, exhibitions and even an amusement park.
Hilltop castles
Rhineland-Palatinate isn’t just famous for its wines. This state also features an overwhelming number of ancient castles.
Eltz castle is just under an hour north of Hahn and contains more than 850 years of history within its walls. Seemingly plucked from a fairy tale, this medieval castle is perched upon a hill and surrounded by luscious forestry.
Untouched by war, thanks to the family who have owned it since construction, enjoy exploring its perfectly preserved heritage dating back to the Middle Ages, including original artwork and décor.
On your way to visit Eltz castle, stop off in the historic town of Cochem. The town itself is quaint, but just above it sits the staggering Cochem Castle. Dating back to the 11th century, this is another fine example of the state’s impressive hilltop castles.
Mainhattan
Once you’ve had your fill of local delicacies and medieval castles, the bright lights of Frankfurt are within easy reach from Hahn. Nicknamed Mainhattan thanks to its towering skyscrapers and banking institutions, Frankfurt is far from the quaint village you landed in.
Climb the Main Tower for the best views in all of Frankfurt, standing tall at 200 metres high. Visit Römerberg square, home to an array of colourful medieval buildings, to sample local goods at the market stalls. Wander the Main river and explore the collection of museums along the waterfront, known as the Museumsufer. Whatever your style of travelling, Frankfurt delivers.
