Oporto or Porto is the second largest city in Portugal after Lisbon, and also one of the country?s most important cities for both culture and trade. The historic centre of the city is a dedicated UNESCO World Heritage Site and has many different types of architecture within a small area. The actual port area is a hub of tourist activity, with many bars and restaurants located by the waterfront. The city is also located close to the famous wine region, the Douro Valley. Hiring a car in Oporto is the best way to see the sights of the city and the surrounding area.
Oporto is one of the oldest cities in Portugal, as you?ll discover from the many different types of architecture present there ? the area boasts many great examples of Romanesque and Baroque architecture. Visit Ribeira, the Old Town area, of the city and you will see many old shops and restaurants, as well as churches and other buildings that remind you of centuries ago. Due to its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Old Town is largely unspoilt and remains a charming part of the city. The views from the top of the hill here over the river and the rest of the city draw many visitors each year. The more modern port area is a favourite destination for tourists too - its vibrant atmosphere is somewhat different to the quietness of the Old Town. Football fans will be able to visit the Est?dio do Drag?o stadium which is the home of Porto FC, a well-known European club. There is much to do and see beyond the city boundaries too; by renting a car in Oporto you will have access to the famous Douro Valley region of the country, as well as having good access links to the rest of Portugal.
