With our extensive range of hire cars, you’ll find everything from spacious family vehicl, to sporty and sleek options. Book your car in advance, and get on the road and exploring the city with car hire at Heathrow Airport

Driving in and around London

Driving in London can be a little daunting for those not used to navigating busy cities. However, getting from Heathrow Airport into the capital couldn’t be simpler. With directions clearly signposted to the M25 (or The London Orbital) and the airport’s Northern Perimeter Road to join the M4 motorway, you’ll soon find yourself on track.

Once you get onto the M25, you’ll be able to access any part of London. Heading over the River Thames at the Dartford Crossing towards Kent will incur a charge which must be paid in advance, however, so plan ahead if this is on the route to your destination.

Outside the city itself, a wide array of exciting day trips are possible. To visit Windsor and Reading, go west on the M4, while Winchester, Basingstoke and the picturesque South Coast are accessible from the M25 and M3.

A congestion charge applies to most vehicles on weekdays between the hours of 7am and 6pm in London’s central zones. Check what the most current toll charges are online before you travel, as sometimes it can be easier to pay in advance to avoid any unexpected costs or fines.

Observe the varying speed limits when driving in and around London. Typically these are 70mph (112km/h) on motorways and dual carriageways, 60mph (96km/h) on single out of town carriageways where indicated, and 30mph (48km/h) in built up areas, unless otherwise signed. However, in some busy parts of central London it will drop to 20mph (32km/h), and limits can vary on suburban and rural roads between towns and cities, so watch out for speed signs and always check these for the route that you are on.

It is also important to be aware of designated bus, taxi and cycle lanes which you can incur a fine for if you drive in them during restricted times. Be extra vigilant in the city, especially when stood in stationary traffic, where cyclists may overtake on both the outside and inside lanes.

A quick guide to London

As one of the world’s most vibrant and exciting cities, there are hundreds of reasons to visit London.

These range from the extensive business hubs and iconic historical attractions to its thriving fashion scene and world-famous shopping streets – and that’s not even scratching the surface. London bubbles with fun and innovation in every corner, with a whole host of history and culture to discover. From Heathrow Airport’s prime location, hire a car and access this stunning city and the incredible surrounding areas with ease.

See Central London

The UK’s capital city is the culmination of many different cultures and influences blending together to create diverse culinary delights, a thriving arts scene and a flourishing entertainment hub. Central London is a sprawling metropolis of big businesses, instantly recognisable landmarks and, most of all, opportunities to explore.

Visit iconic attractions such as Blenheim Palace, the Tower of London, Big Ben and the grand Houses of Parliament, to learn about London’s impressive history.

Take a ride on the London Eye for an aerial view of the stunning skyline, or stroll along Oxford Street and treat yourself to something special in one of the city’s many flagship stores. From chocolate-covered strawberries in the delectable food hall at Harrods department store, to the magical worldofHamleys toyshop, few cities compare to central London when it comes to excitement.

Visit Windsor Castle

The longstanding weekend residence of Queen Elizabeth II, Windsor Castle is a magnificent structure and one of the oldest occupied castles in the world. A must-visit for history lovers, it has been the home of an astounding 39 British monarchs to date.

A visit to the castle can fill an entire morning or afternoon, especially if you want to experience it all. Plan plenty of time to fit it all in, with two to three hours recommended.

Discover incredible historical artworks from the Royal Collection, explore St George’s Chapel where Henry VIII was buried, and in the summer months watch the Changing of the Guard ceremony take place outside. In the state apartments, you can also see restored interiors from the late Georgian period, designed by Morel & Seddon.

Head to Legoland

Located a thirty-minute drive away from Heathrow Airport, you’ll find the world-famous Legoland Windsor, just off the M4 motorway. Colourful, interactive and bursting with creativity, it’s the perfect place for a family day out. Immerse yourself in a Lego world, with incredible landscapes built of bricks, theme park rides and fun performances to watch.

Get involved with hands on Lego-building activities and unleash your inventiveness. There are many places for refreshments within the park, with the on-site sweet shop perfect for grabbing some snacks for the car journey back. Those wanting to extend their stay can also spend a night in the on-site Lego themed hotel for the full experience.

With car hire at Heathrow Airport all the incredible areas of Greater London are at your fingertips, giving you the freedom to explore at your own leisure – and enjoy a truly memorable trip.
