London looms large for travellers to the UK. A dynamic and progressive city, it safeguards its proud history while always moving forwards. It’s where you’ll find the pomp and ceremony of royalty, but also vibrant street markets and sensational food – a melting pot of nations with unparalleled creativity.
And if London is too much, hiring a car at Stansted Airport also gives you access to the quieter countryside and charming neighbouring towns which have plenty to offer.
A capital idea
Where to begin with London? There’s so much to see here that it’s best to arrive with a bit of an agenda. The city is split in two by the Thames, the banks studded with landmarks. St. Paul’s Cathedral stands on one side with its majestic dome, while the recreation of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre can be found on the other. Whether it’s a show in the West End or exploring grand old buildings and centuries of history – you’re spoiled for choice.
Explore the high-end boutiques and jewellery shops of Bond Street, the bookshops of Piccadilly and the handsomely decorated arcades. Head to Soho for the latest food, whether it’s street Mexican or sizzling Spanish.
There’s sporting action galore on tap here too, whether it’s an international game at Wembley Stadium, a rugby international at Twickenham, athletics, hockey, basketball … the list goes on.
Cam one, cam all
Whether you’re wandering by the side of the River Cam or boating down it, there’s nowhere better to be on a sunny day in Cambridge. The city is very much dominated by the esteemed university, the beautiful buildings willing to tell their tale with some gentle coaxing. Some of these buildings are of medieval stock, and the list of famous alumni is staggering.
If you’ve only a short time here, make sure you see King’s College Chapel, a masterpiece of late Gothic architecture. Make time for some of the other highlights – the Polar Museum, the exotic plants of the Botanic Garden and the wide range of antiquities at the Fitzwilliam Museum. Here you’ll take in quirky artefacts from Rome and ancient Egypt, as well as a priceless selection of paintings by Old Masters and Impressionists.
Britain’s oldest town
A settlement since the 5th century BC, Colchester can claim to be the first British city. The Romans came here later, before the Normans invaded and built the remarkable Colchester Castle.
You can discover the area’s history and heritage at the local landmarks, including the remains of a Roman theatre and the castle – Europe’s largest Norman keep – which houses an impressive collection of archaeological items. There are plenty of things to try your hand at, along with activities for children of all ages.
Alternatively, you can simply enjoy exploring what is still a winningly handsome town. Head down to the river to see the city’s historic half-timbered buildings, sitting pretty on the banks in rosy shades of pink and white.
Car hire from London Stansted Airport is the ticket to exploring not just the capital but also a host of other gems of England’s south-east.
