With a host of family attractions for fun-filled days out, spectacular areas of natural beauty close by and great links to bustling cities, car hire in Telford can really help you get the most out of your trip.
A modern metropolis
Telford is known for being one of the UK’s newest towns, coming to life in 1963. Emerging as part of the reconstruction of England after the Second World War, it was built to rehouse city dwellers from Birmingham and Wolverhampton into more rural areas.
Originally, it was named Dawley, but gradually was redeveloped to officially become Telford in 1968.
Home to the largest shopping mall in Shropshire, with enough car parking spaces for 4,000 cars, the Southwater Shopping Centre is a must for indulging in some retail therapy.
Open seven days a week, here you’ll find most of the major UK stores, with high-street favourites such as Zara and Topshop, whilehe food quarter is home to a number of much-loved chain restaurants such as Nando’s, and there’s an IMAX Cineworld featuring 11 screens, perfect for catching a few of the hottest new movies.
Wander the Wrekin
Just south of Wellington and only a short drive away, the Wrekin is one of Telford’s most famous countryside areas.
A much-loved spot for ramblers, hikers and climbers alike, it’s the perfect place to head to fill up your lungs with fresh country air and take in some incredible views. The Wrekin itself is a famous, wooded ridge, bursting through the skyline at 407 metres high. To see even more of the area, drive to Forest Glen, where you can park the car and get straight onto the main walking path.
Crafted from volcanic rocks, the north side of the Wrekin is the most picturesque, with plenty of trees and wildlife spotting opportunities, while the south side features some incredible geological rock formations you won’t want to miss.
The iconic Ironbridge
Telford is home to one of the world’s oldest and most magnificent iron bridges. Nestled within the Ironbridge Gorge Valley, the pioneering structure is an iconic symbol of the industrial revolution. Built in 1779, it was the first cast iron structure in the world and kick-started the use of this method in buildings and bridges from the 18th-century onwards.
In 2017, the bridge was completely restored by the English Heritage Foundation, with £3.6 million investment in the project. A visit to the bridge and the surrounding valley makes for a truly educating day out, while there are a number of other renowned heritage sites nearby including Wenlock Priory and Buildwas Abbey.
