Wolverhampton has all the attractions you’d expect of a modern city.
Here you can take in the dramatic spectacles unfolding on the sporting and theatrical stages, but you’ll also find scenic retreats left, right and centre – and plenty of places to visit beyond.
Rich in history
Wolverhampton’s long history dates back to its foundation in the 10th century. And unlike many other cities, reminders of its past are not merely found only in its centre.
Wightwick Manor & Gardens is a National Trust-owned Victorian manor house around six kilometres west of the city. It’s a beautifully preserved example of the Aesthetic architectural movement of the 19th century, and is open to the public much of the year. Once you’ve browsed the stunning selection of pre-Raphaelite artwork indoors, you can explore the lush green beauty of the surrounding gardens and woodlands.
If you want to travel further back in time, Moseley Old Hall to the north is another National Trust site offering an intriguing glimpse into the area’s past. It achieved notoriety as a hideout for the future King Charles II while he was attempting to escape England – following his defeat to Oliver Cromwell’s army in 1651. The hall is also open to the public, with guided tours available.
Park and garden beauty
Wolverhampton has something for urban dwellers and rural explorers alike, with a variety of entertainment options and an abundance of natural hotspots.
If you fall into the latter camp, West Park is a must-visit. It’s a classic Victorian parkland with refreshing, energising atmosphere. Here you can picnic by the lake, play a set or two of tennis on the courts and saunter around the Victorian Conservatory. Best of all, it’s only a five-minute drive west of the city centre.
The gardens are simply beautiful – blooming with more than 700 rose varieties. Take in the colours and fragrances, particularly if you’re visiting in the summertime, to really appreciate the beauty on offer.
Drama on the pitch and stage
There’s plenty of spine-tingling, pulse-racing action on offer in Wolverhampton – after all, this is the home of one of English football’s most famous clubs: Wolves.
You can catch the team battling it out on many weekends throughout the year. They play at Molineux Stadium – a stone’s throw away from the city centre. It’s easier to park in one of the car parks in town and walk over to the ground, given its close proximity.
If sport’s not the order of the day, check out the Grand Theatre on the east side of town. Its roster of productions includes modern shows, classic performances and music concerts. Park up nearby to enjoy fantastic evening entertainment during your trip. There’s also the inspiring Wolverhampton Art Gallery, located close by, which has changing exhibitions throughout the year and a permanent collection of Pop Art by artists such as Andy Warhol.
