The small American state of New Jersey, or ‘NJ’ for short, stands on the Northeast coast of the USA. If you pick up a hire car in New Jersey you’ll soon find it’s the most densely populated of all the states. The largest city is Newark and the state capital is Trenton - it borders both New York City and Philadelphia and is home to many of their suburbs. You’ll also find Atlantic City and Jersey City, as well as Long Beach Island along the east coast - a popular beach area connected to the mainland by a single bridge.
If you hire a car in New Jersey you’ll be able to explore the whole state. The highlights are along the heavily-developed 140 miles of Jersey shore, which includes the beachfront casinos at Atlantic City and the world’s longest boardwalk. Look out too for the more bohemian resort of Asbury Park and the genteel seaside town of Spring Lake. Elsewhere you can find the scenic Liberty State Park on New York Bay facing the State of Liberty and various major theme parks throughout the state, including Bowcraft, Kingda Ka, Clementon, Casino Pier and, perhaps the best of all, Six Flags.
New Jersey driving is little different to driving in the rest of the USA, you drive on the right hand side. You’ll probably find that the roads are busier than normal, but there are a few specific rules to watch out for. Using a mobile phone or texting is forbidden while driving, everyone in the car over eight years old must wear a seatbelt and you must stop at least 25ft away from any school bus that is showing its flashing red lights. You need to put your headlights on when you are using your windscreen wipers and you can’t have stickers on any of your windows, other than the legally required ones.
