The American state of Ohio stands in the mid-west region, with a 300-mile shoreline along Lake Erie. The state is often called ‘The Buckeye State’ or ‘The Birthplace of Aviation’ and is abbreviated to ‘OH’. If you hire a car in Ohio you’ll find it’s mostly a very flat state with industrial ports along the lakeshore. This is where you’ll find Cleveland, Sandusky and Toledo. The capital is in the heart of the state however; Columbus is also the biggest city in Ohio. The state has many amazing sights to see and things to do including rock and roll museums and theme parks.
If you hire a car in Ohio you’ll be able to tour the state easily thanks to its impressive road network. Some of the top attractions are in Cleveland. The ‘birthplace of rock and roll’ is where you’ll find the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – a spectacular lakeside museum of popular music. At Dayton there’s Aviation Heritage National Historic Park dedicated to a different kind of local pioneer, the Wright Brothers. At Cincinnati look out for Museum Centre, a collection of museums inside an old art deco rail station. And Cedar Point near Sandusky is one of the mid-west’s top theme parks. It includes some spectacular roller coasters and water rides with a huge tidal wave.
You’ll drive on the right in Ohio, just like any other part of the USA. In fact driving in Ohio is as easy and safe as any state. The only local variations to driving rules are small: in some counties using a mobile or texting while driving is banned - but not all. It’s probably safest to avoid doing it everywhere. Stop at least ten feet from any bus picking up or dropping children or disabled passengers and at a railway crossing if signalled to do so or you can see a train coming. And, if you’ve got your wipers on, you need to put your headlights on too.
