Palermo is the capital of Sicily and Province of Palermo. The city is noted for its extensive history, mixture of cultures and food. Due to the cities frequent changing of rulers and invaders whom called this city their own the architectural style is quite unique as Romanesque meets arabesque with some gothic thrown in for good measure. If you are visiting this city why not hire a car and travel the beautiful and picturesque northern Sicilian coastline with its high cliffs and quiet beaches.
When in Palermo we advise that you see the Catalan influenced Palermo Cathedral and see the architectural style that is unique to Sicily, Arab-Norman. The Piazza Pretoria and the Fontana Pretoria are also a must see. The square itself is a welcome break from the chaotic streets and the Fontana Pretoria is a beautifully ornate and huge fountain in the centre of the square.
8km west of Palermo is the village/suburb of Monreale, and within this village lies the awe inspiring cathedral (Duomo di Monreale). The front exterior is rather plain but the main attraction hides within as the interior decoration is incredibly detailed and lavishly adorned with glass mosaics and gold. With the convenience of a rental car this and other hidden attractions await to be explored and enjoyed.
