Driving in and around Spain

While travelling around Spain by car you’ll be driving on the right hand side of the road. As in Ireland, seatbelts must always be worn while in a vehicle and the use of handheld devices, such as mobile phones, is banned.

The maximum speed limit on motorways and dual carriageways is 120km/h. On ordinary roads it dips down to 90km/h and in built-up areas it’s 50km/h. If you’re planning a family holiday, be aware that children under the age of 12 are not allowed to sit in the front passenger seat for safety reasons.

It’s easy to navigate around the mainland due to its modern road network that connects all the major cities. Toll motorways are called autopistas and carry the abbreviation ‘AP’. Spanish motorways are known as autovias and are marked with the letter ‘A’.

The Autovia del Mediterráneo, or the A-7, connects Barcelona to Marbella before continuing along the coast to Cadiz. This route will give you access to the cities and resorts of the Costa del Sol such as Malaga, Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola and Marbella. The A-1 connects Madrid with Bilbao, while the AP-2 and A-2 offer the fastest route between the Spanish capital and Barcelona.

The drive from Puerto de las Palomas to Zahara de la Sierra may only be a short one, but it offers a dramatic journey through the Andalusian landscape. Enjoy spectacular views as your work your way down the twisting mountain pass to the ancient village.

If you’re holidaying on the island of Majorca, take a scenic drive from Andratx to Sóller. Soak up mountain vistas and glimpses of the beautiful blue Mediterranean Sea – there are plenty of pretty picnic spots to stop off at along the way.

A quick guide to Spain

Colourful buildings in Barcelona

The diversity of Spain is simply dazzling. Marvel at flamenco dancers in Seville’s sun-baked plazas, indulge in a bowl of authentic paella in Valencia’s old town, wind down on a blissful beach holiday in Malaga or soak up the architectural magic of Barcelona.

Soak up diverse landscapes

Fringed by golden beaches, Spain is deservedly adored by sun worshippers. With azure blue waves lapping on the shore, La Concha beach in the Basque region is the ideal place to soak up the rays while on a city break in San Sebastian.

For unspoilt coastal beauty, make for the quiet stretch of sand at Mónsul on the southern tip of the country. If you’re a water sports fan, Fuerteventura is famous for providing ideal conditions for everything from surfing to kayaking and scuba diving.

As you travel inland, the beautiful beaches give way to lush rolling hillsides. National parks are dotted throughout this country and an adventure can be found at each one. Hike through the rustic hills in Andalucía, or enjoy striking meadow views in the Liebana Valley.

On the island of Tenerife, you can take a break from the beach to trek through the Teide National Park for spectacular mountain views. You’ll find snowy peaks north of Barcelona and cliff-edge coastlines with unspoilt beaches in the peaceful, yet beautiful, Asturias in northwest Spain.

Experience historic wonders

Spain’s rich history is evident all over the country, but Seville and Granada perhaps showcase it best. Blessed with an epic Gothic cathedral, ornate Mudéjar palace and lavish plaza, Seville’s centuries-old city centre will make your jaw drop.

If you’re within reach, it’s well worth making a day trip to equally stunning Granada and visiting the jewel in the city’s crown, the Alhambra. Wander through this magnificent Moorish palace complex and marvel at its architectural beauty.

Explore cosmopolitan cities

Nestled in the heart of the country, the Spanish capital of Madrid provides the perfect introduction to the country’s way of life. Feast on traditional tapas, sun yourself in the striking Buen Retiro Park and admire world-class art at Museo del Prado.

Spain’s artistic flair is best seen in Barcelona. Wander around the city to see spectacular works from legendary architect Antoni Gaudí – marvel at the magnificent Sagrada Família and relax in the enchanting Park Güell. Meander down Las Ramblas, the city’s backbone, to feel the Catalan city’s pulse. Stop off at markets, shops and bars and continue all the way down to the picturesque port.

Venture further down the coast to Valencia to explore the futuristic buildings of the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, a contemporary complex housing a science museum, 3D cinema, aquarium and opera house.

By way of contrast, enjoy a traditional culinary experience in the city’s old town. Tuck into a bowl of traditional Valencian stew, sample the famous paella and snack on salty fried anchovies.

Car hire in Spain gives you the freedom you need to make your visit here even more memorable, with all the convenience to explore as much as you like – and all at your own pace.
